Kurdish poet and writer Omar Mohammadi from Oshnavieh (Shno) has been sentenced to five years and six months in prison, along with four years of suspended terms. He was transferred to Oshnavieh Prison two months ago to begin serving his sentence, despite suffering from multiple health conditions and being denied adequate medical care.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Mohammadi, 54, received his sentence from the Revolutionary Court of Oshnavieh, which issued five years and six months of custodial imprisonment in addition to four years of suspended terms. He has been held in Oshnavieh Central Prison for the past two months to serve his final sentence.

The charge brought against this writer allegedly relates to his work teaching and organizing Kurdish-language courses.

A source familiar with the case told Hengaw that Mohammadi is serving his sentence without access to essential medication, despite suffering from spinal disc disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney problems. The source added that he requires four daily doses of insulin due to his diabetes.

Mohammadi was previously arrested by Intelligence Ministry forces at his home in Oshnavieh on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
