December Protests— Ebrahim Abedini at risk of death sentence in Rafsanjan

Ebrahim Abedini, a resident of Rafsanjan in Kerman Province who was arrested during the December protests, is at risk of facing the death penalty after being charged with moharebeh (“waging war against God”).

According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Abedini, 39, has been formally accused of moharebeh by judicial authorities. Under Iran’s Islamic Penal Code, such a charge can carry the death penalty.

An informed source stated that Abedini worked as a contractor at the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex and Mine. His father was killed during the eight-year Iran–Iraq war, and his mother is deceased.

Abedini was arrested on Friday, January 9, 2026, by government forces and subsequently transferred to prison.

No further details have been released regarding the judicial proceedings against him.
