Mostafa Nezami ends his life ahead of execution in Ghezel Hesar Prison

Mostafa Nezami, a death row prisoner held in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj, ended his life while awaiting execution.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the 32-year-old resident of Tehran, who was imprisoned in Unit 3 of Ghezel Hesar Prison, died on Monday, June 22, 2026, after taking his own life inside the prison.

Sources told Hengaw that Nezami was facing imminent execution. Suffering severe psychological distress while awaiting the implementation of his death sentence, he ended his life by ingesting pills and an excessive amount of methadone. He died before he could be transferred to a medical facility.

Nezami was arrested in 2022 on charges of “premeditated murder” and was subsequently sentenced to death by the Criminal Court of Tehran Province. After the closure of Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj in 2023, he was transferred to Unit 3 of Ghezel Hesar Prison, where he was held until his death.
