Political prisoner Rezvaneh Ahmadkhanbeigi returns to Evin Prison with her infant daughter to serve remainder of sentence

Rezvaneh Ahmadkhanbeigi, a civil activist and political prisoner, has returned to Evin Prison to serve the remainder of her prison sentence following the end of her maternity leave. She was accompanied by her infant daughter, who is under the age of two.
According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Ahmadkhanbeigi returned to the women’s ward of Evin Prison together with her young daughter, Mahfar Lalehzari,on Monday, June 29, 2026.
While serving her prison sentence, Ahmadkhanbeigi was granted temporary leave to give birth on September 18, 2024. Following the conclusion of her maternity leave, she has now been required to return to prison with her daughter, who is under two years old.
Ahmadkhanbeigi and her husband, Behfar Lalehzari, were sentenced by the Tehran Revolutionary Court in January 2024, to a combined total of ten years’ imprisonment on charges of “assembly and collusion to act against national security” and “propaganda against the state.” Following the submission of a request for judicial review and the referral of the case to a parallel branch, their sentences were ultimately reduced to 21 months’ imprisonment.
The couple, both civil activists, were arrested by Iranian security forces at their home on September 18, 2023. They have previously been subjected to repeated arrests, imprisonment, and other forms of judicial and security persecution because of their peaceful civil activism. Behfar Lalehzari is currently serving his prison sentence.
