Two January protest detainees sentenced to a combined 46 years in prison

Abolfazl Rahbar and his cousin, Omid Rahbar, two political prisoners held at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj, have been sentenced to a combined total of 46 years in prison by the Tehran Revolutionary Court. They were arrested during the January 2026 protests

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Abolfazl Rahbar, 23, was recently sentenced to 20 years in prison, while Omid Rahbar, 24, received a 26-year prison sentence. The heavy sentences were issued by a branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court and were communicated orally to the two prisoners inside the prison.

The court tried the two men on allegations of “membership in an opposition group” and other security-related activities.

Rahbar and his cousin were arrested by Iranian security forces in January 2026. In early May 2026, they were transferred from Great Tehran Penitentiary (Fashafouyeh Prison) to Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj, where they are currently being held in Suite 37.
