Soheila Mohammadi, a Kurdish political prisoner from Selmas who has been incarcerated in Urmia Central Prison for two years, committed suicide as a sign of protest against the rejection of her amnesty request.

According to the report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on the afternoon of February 21, 2023, Sohaila Mohammadi, a political prisoner from Selmas who has been imprisoned in Urmia Central Prison for more than two years, committed suicide with a knife in the kitchen of the women's ward of this prison.

Sohaila Mohammadi committed suicide on Tuesday after her request for amnesty was denied, according to an informed source from Urmia Prison. She had been denied the ability to be sent on leave for more than two years as a result of the IRGC's persistent pressure.

This source said that she stabbed her chest with a knife, cutting close to the heart and that she lost a lot of blood. It should be noted that despite being in poor physical condition, this political prisoner is receiving care at the prison clinic because the IRGC refused to allow her to be transported for treatment to medical facilities outside the prison.

Sohaila Mohammadi, 30 years old, was arrested in Selmas in the fall of 2020 by the intelligence forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and after several months of interrogation, she was transferred to the women's ward of Urmia Central Prison.

She was later sentenced to five years in prison by the first branch of the Revolutionary Court of Urmia on the charge of being a member of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), and since then she has been incarcerated in the women's ward of Urmia Central Prison without the right to use leave.

It should be mentioned that the news of Sohaila Mohammadi's arrest and imprisonment has not been reported in the media so far, and Hengaw is the first source to report this news.
