The inhumane flogging sentence of 74 lashes was carried out against Laleh Vahabi, a 35-year-old female residing in the Talish district of Gilan province.

According to reports received by the Hengaw organization for Human Rights, at 10 o'clock in the morning on Tuesday, 25th of July, 2023, the inhumane flogging sentence of 74 lashes was implemented against Laleh Vahabi, a women's rights activist, within a closed confinement at the Talish Judiciary Branch.

Laleh Vahabi, 35, was arrested by government forces in Talish back in January 2022. Ultimately, she was sentenced by the Public prosecutor and Revolutionary Court of Talish to one year of imprisonment and flogging of 74 lashes.

It is worth noting that the current situation of Laleh Vahabi and the details of her case, as well as the charges against her, remain unknown at the moment.

The use of flogging as a punishment by the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran remains controversial, as it is considered inhumane, unjust, and a violation of human dignity according to international human rights documents. Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights has expressly prohibited the implementation of such punishments.
