Saeed Sheikh, a Tehran-based lawyer, has been sentenced by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to one year and six months in prison, a monetary fine, and a one-year ban from practicing law.

According to information obtained by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the sentence was issued by Branch 103 of Tehran Criminal Court (Criminal Court II). Sheikh received 18 months of imprisonment, a financial penalty, and a one-year prohibition from working as an attorney. The ruling relates to his online expression and public commentary on social media, for which authorities accused him of “expressing opinions in cyberspace.” Two-thirds of the prison sentence, amounting to 12 months, has been suspended.

Sheikh was previously arrested in October 2022 during a protest held by members of the legal community and was later released on bail. In December of the same year, Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Mohammadzadeh Amouzad Mahdareji, sentenced him to a total of three years in prison on charges of “assembly and collusion” and “propaganda against the state.”
