Lawyer Mohammad Tarighat Esfanjani sentenced to three years in prison

Mohammad Tarighat Esfanjani, a Turkish lawyer and member of the East Azerbaijan Bar Association, has been sentenced by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the city of Osku to three years of discretionary imprisonment.

According to information obtained by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, a recent ruling issued by the Revolutionary Court of Osku and officially communicated to Mohammad Tarighat Esfanjani sentenced him to two years in prison on charges of “insulting the Supreme Leader and the founder of the Islamic Republic” and one additional year on charges of “propaganda against the state.”

Under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code concerning the aggregation of sentences, only the harshest sentence, two years of discretionary imprisonment, will be enforceable.

Judicial and security authorities in Osku have based the charges against the lawyer solely on “publishing critical notes and posts on his personal Instagram page.”

Mohammad Tarighat Esfanjani is an independent lawyer and a member of the East Azerbaijan Bar Association who has previously faced security pressure due to his professional activities and public positions.
