Lawyer Mehdi Ansari sentenced to five years in prison

Iranian authorities have sentenced Mehdi Ansari, a lawyer and member of the Fars and Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Bar Association, to five years in prison and additional penalties following his arrest in connection with the January 2026 protests.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, a branch of the Revolutionary Court in Shiraz recently issued and formally notified Ansari of a verdict sentencing him to five years of discretionary imprisonment on the charge of “assembly and collusion against national security.”

The court also imposed a two-year travel ban as an additional punishment.

As previously reported by Hengaw, government forces raided Ansari’s home in Shiraz on January 28, 2026, and arrested him using violence following the protests. He was subsequently transferred to an undisclosed location.

Following the completion of his interrogation process, Ansari was temporarily released from Adel Abad Prison in Shiraz after posting bail of 5 billion tomans pending the conclusion of judicial proceedings.
