Hengaw – Wednesday, June 24, 2026

A one-year prison sentence imposed on Hassan Ronaghi, a Turkish political activist from Malekan in East Azerbaijan Province, has been upheld by the Iranian judiciary and is now final. He is also facing a separate case before the Revolutionary Court.

According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Branch 12 of the East Azerbaijan Province Court of Appeals recently upheld in full the one-year sentence previously issued by Branch 102 of the Second Criminal Court of Malekan.

Ronaghi announced the ruling in a post on his X account (formerly Twitter).

The sentence stems from the fabricated charge of “spreading falsehoods with the intent to disturb public opinion in support of and to strengthen the Zionist regime.”

Ronaghi has also disclosed that a separate and more serious case has been opened against him before the Malekan Revolutionary Court. In that case, he has been sentenced to several years in prison and one year of internal exile to the city of Sarbaz.

The second case is currently under appeal and has not yet become final.
