Mine Blast Claims Lives and Injures Afghan Citizens in Ilam Province

The detonation of landmines, remnants from the eight-year Iran-Iraq war, along the borders of Mehran city in Ilam province resulted in one fatality and four injuries. The affected individuals were citizens of Afghanistan.
According to a report obtained by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, an individual lost their life on the evening of Wednesday, January 10, 2024, due to the detonation of mines leftover from the Iran-Iraq war in the border regions of Mehran city, Ilam province. Additionally, at least four others sustained serious injuries during this tragic incident.
Gholamreza Alimohammadi, the CEO of the Iranian Red Crescent Society of Ilam Province, informed the local media that the mine explosion occurred in close proximity to the Bahram Abad checkpoint in Mehran.
The identities of the deceased and the injured have not been officially confirmed at the time of writing this news. The four injured individuals have been promptly transported to medical centers for necessary treatment.
Hengaw Organization has learned that the victims, all Afghan citizens, were attempting to cross into Iraqi territory under the cover of night.
According to the Statistics and Documentation Center of Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, a total of 27 individuals fell victim to landmines in Iran throughout 2023. Alarmingly, 96% of these cases, equivalent to 26 incidents, involved Kurdish individuals.
