According to data compiled by the Statistics and Documents Center of the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the month of January 2024 witnessed the arrest of a total of 152 individuals by security forces across Iran. Notably, the majority of these arrests, comprising 81 individuals, were Kurds.

The breakdown of the reported arrests is as follows: 81 Kurds, 34 Turkish individuals, 14 Baloch residents, along with 12 women and 1 child. These individuals were either detained or abducted by the security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran during January.

 

Over 53% of those detained were Kurdish residents:

Hengaw's statistics reveal that in January, the government institutions of the Islamic Republic of Iran arrested a minimum of 81 Kurdish individuals. This constitutes more than 53.5% of the total individuals apprehended throughout the country last month.

Breaking down the arrests further, 34 Turkish residents, accounting for 22.5% of cases, and 14 Balochs, making up 9% of cases, were detained. Additionally, 3 Arabs, 3 Lor individuals, 3 Gilak individuals, and a Turkmen were also arrested by the security institutions of the Islamic Republic of Iran last month.

 

Detention of Religious Minorities:

The detention of followers of religious minorities persisted in January, aligning with the patterns observed in the preceding months. Government institutions continued these arrests, leading to the apprehension of at least 20 religious activists within the Islamic Republic of Iran last month.

This report discloses that among the arrested religious activists, three were followers of the Baha'i religion, comprising one woman and two men. Furthermore, a Christian convert in Dezful and 16 Sunni activists, all Kurdish individuals, were also detained last month.

 

Detention of Women and a Child in January:

The Statistics and Documents Center of the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights reports that in the past month, at least 12 women were apprehended by security agencies in Iran, constituting 8% of the total detainees.

Notably, six of these arrested women were Turkish individuals from Selmas, detained during a protest against the environmental impacts of a salt factory.

Additionally, within this timeframe, at least one Baloch child under 18 was arrested by security institutions in Zahedan.

 

Detention of Educators, Students, and Media Activists:

In January of this year, according to Hengaw statistics, at least eight students were arrested across various cities, including Yazd, Shiraz, Marivan, Dehgolan, Tabriz, Rasht, Tehran, and Fanuj. Furthermore, security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran detained two university professors in Rasht and Dehgolan during the same period.

Additionally, government institutions in different cities in Iran arrested at least 3 journalists and media activists, along with 5 artists and writers.
