Iran detains Maryam Basir Tavana, member of justice-seeking families

Maryam Basir Tavana, a member of Iran’s justice-seeking families and the sister of Mehran Basir Tavana, who was killed during the Woman, Life, Freedom (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi) uprising, has been arrested to serve a four-month prison sentence and transferred to Lakan Prison in Rasht, Gilan province.
According to information received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Basir Tavana was detained on Sunday in order to begin serving her sentence and was transferred to Lakan Prison. She had previously been sentenced by an appeals court to one year of discretionary imprisonment, with one-third of the sentence deemed enforceable.
Mehran Basir Tavana was a 29-year-old Gilak athlete from Fuman, in Gilan province. He was fatally shot during protests across Iran on November 16, 2022, which coincided with the anniversary of the November 2019 protest killings.
